My trainer suggested that I buy a belt before trying heavier dead lifts or cleans. I've always thought weight belts served no real purpose (except, maybe, some psychological one). What's your opinion?
We prohibit any client from using a belt. Our objective is to build a structural belt of muscle and connective tissue and proper posture. Other trainers have different objectives, and different fears. I doubt the loads being lifted in this context are heavy enough to merit a belt. Power lifters pulling and truly massive loads benefit from a belt. However, for 98% of people it's gives a false sense of security and actually keeps one from developing the structural integrity that is usually the stated objective of physical training in the first place.
