In 1936 Popular Mechanics printed an article about the popularity of bicycling. One of the more intriguing quotes is about how, "Cycle racing, once a major sport, is also coming back into its own in amateur circles."
That same year the Tour de France covered more than 4400 km in 21 stages with an average speed of 31.1 km/hour. Belgian Sylvère Maes won the overall, with Julian Berrendero (Spain) earning the King of the Mountains jersey, and 11th place overall. Some of the stages must have been absolutely brutal on the bikes of the day, with many of the mountain stages contested on unpaved roads.
